January 2005 - Toyota to Axe MR2 and Celica?

Surely rumours that Toyota will axe the popular MR2 and Celica Ranges can't possibly be true?  Various net sources are quoting that the company had planned to axe the Supra, MR2 and Celica.  We're amazed that with the company's increasing success in Formula 1 it wants to ditch these sporty models from its line up.  Especially as there is little news of successors to any of them.  We await further news with baited breath.

OLD NEWS

Friday 11th May - Matrix Racing

Toyota plan to drop the stunning VVTL-i engine from the Celica 190 into their unique new Matrix.  Matrix is about to be released in the USA with a 130bhp VVT-i engine.  Does this suggest that MR2 is going to get the VVTL-i treatment in the near future?   Imagine a 190 bhp Spyder - Porsche won't know what's hit them!

Saturday 10th February - MR2 now available with sequential gearbox.

Finally the UK gets the sequential gearbox on the MR2.  It's a great enhancement to the driveability of Toyota's two seater sports car, but it doesn't exactly improve the performance!  We'd expect it to be faster than a conventionally equiped vehicle, but in practice its 0-60 time is increased from a useful 7.9 seconds to a slightly sluggish 9.2.  OK, that's just over a second slower and it's so easy to use, and such great fun, that we forgive it.  But would we be prepared to fork out the extra £1500 asking price for it?  We wouldn't, but the decision is yours!

Thursday 1st February – Cheapest place to buy Toyota Sports Cars Online?

Have you discovered the huge variation in the cost of new Toyota sports cars such as the MR2?  UK Prices vary enormously - probably because both the MR2 and Celica are still in such short supply.  Some retailers offer decent discounts, but others are still taking the opportunity to charge list prices while there's a shortage.

In the UK we found prices for MR2s ranging from just over £15,000 to well over £17,000.
