Toyota MR2

MR2 - What's it all about.  No-one know's exaclty what MR2 stands for.  We guess at 'Midship Runaround", or "Mid Engine, Rear Wheel Drive, 2 Seater" etc, etc.

MR2 Spyder in transit.

However, we can at least agree that all three generations have been great cars.  The MKI broke the mould.  The MarkII took us to another level of quality and style, and then the MKIII brought us something completely different in the shape of the MR-S concept car based convertible.  Which one is your favourite?

MkI

The MkI is the original economic, mid engined sports car.  Nothing could touch it when it was released almost 20 years ago.  You can now pick up one of these beauties for peanuts.  And there's loads of great information on maintaining and improving them.  So if that's your thing, then look no further.

MKII

Wow - We thought the original was good, but the MkII was even better.  A beautiful shape that will stand the test of time;  especially as the new MkIII Spyder isn't really a replacement for the hard top, or T-Bar MkII.  Some owners will fancy a change and will go for the new model, but others will continue to prefer their old MkII, and why not!  It's still a great mid-engined sports car and nothing can touch it in the price range.

MR2 MkIII Information

MkIII Convertible (2000 on)

The MkIII almost never saw the light of day.  Some Toyota executives couldn't see the logic in making another Mr Two now that the competition had started to wake up.  Toyota developed the sporting heritage of the Celica and were prepared to make it their flagship sports car - replacing the old Celica, the MR2 and the Supra which had fallen victim to environmental constraints.  But the design team had other ideas and came up with the MR-S Spyder.  This was radically different to the old MR2 and the Celica, and whilst other manufacturers such as BMW and Porsche were offering soft top sports cars, nobody could offer a decent, sub £20K spyder.  Toyota had established another gap in the market.

VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing - intelligent) gave the new model great performance and economy, and the styling is Boxster meets the future.  A unique new car for the 21st century at a price that isn't too high.  Great handling completes the package, making a fun car for those who either don't need to transport anything when they're driving, or else have a second car for practical days.
